CL Ranch Founders

Heading west towards the mountains, Richard met up with his brother John, Sorry, your browser doesn't support Java(tm). who had been freighting supplies to the Morley Indians to the West. They settled in the Jumping Pound region, 15 miles West of the Calgary city limit as it is today. The country reminded them of Ireland and it is here that the Copithorne homestead was founded.

The brothers formed a partnership and worked a mixed farm. There was no money then, so they traded their churned butter, hauling it 25 miles to Calgary. Eventually, the brothers built up a range herd, primarily consisting of Durham cattle, with a lazy J as their registered brand In 1895, Richard went out on his own to register the present day CL brand.

The CL Ranch today is a commercial composite seedstock cattle operation. It is home to the CL SuperCross line of cattle genetics, an intensively managed selection program spanning over 30 years. Our main seedstock herd consists of approximately 2000 mother cows on the main ranch. The SuperCross cattle are primarily marketed directly through the local packing plants on Value Based marketing systems, and replacements are used to restock not only the CL home ranch, but also various "Cow-Operators" throughout Western Canada through our CL Beef program.

CL Beef is a cattle sourcing division managed by CL Ranches. CL Beef owns cows that are distributed to cattlemen called "Cow-Operators" within the system. It then buys, feeds and finishes these off-ranch raised commercial cattle, with a preference to buy feeder cattle sired by CL SuperCross bulls.

CL Ranch and the SuperCross system is today a global operation. Since 1996, we have been developing an integrated beef system in Uruguay. We started with an expansive land and cattle operation but now have turned that initial investment into shares of an international company that still owns the CL SuperCross genetics and livestock as well as a slaughterhouse in Salto, Uruguay.
